BlackRhinoceros

BlackRhinceros is a non-partisan, unaffiliated collective. We produce a directory for environmental activists wishing to campaign on these ecological issues: biodiversity, conservation, energy, environmental justice, habitat and pollution.

We work from the principle that in the past few decades greed, ignorance and acquiescence have rammed life on Earth into its most precarious phase. These behaviors critically jeopardize the system of which all living things are an integral part. That system's components are at best severely compromised, and at worst terminally threatened by a host of destructive, polluting, wasteful practices. These practices are the work of aggressive and powerful 'forces' (companies and governments – often acting illegally). Yet there are ready, practical technical solutions now to all the challenges that follow from such behavior. Our issues pages detail these solutions.

Acting together

The best chance to save the Earth (for nothing less is at stake) is to maximize and mobilize the Actions of all of us: there is nothing so strong as people acting whenever and wherever we can.

The basis for all our actions is an unswerving opposition to those who do not and/or will not (or maybe even cannot) acknowledge and honor the richness of nature. To these powerful minorities the Earth is seen as an infinitely exploitable 'commodity'. Attendant on this usually conscious deception these organizations emphasize economic growth as a panacea and as an end in itself. Consequent on this growth is the industrialization of all activity, from forestry to farming to fishing, and to education and culture. Necessary for this industrialization is the drive towards economic globalization, cultural homogenization, commodity accumulation, urbanization, and human alienation – without regard to the best resource we have to sustain life: Nature.

Sustainability and Diversity

It is self-evident that the destruction of everything which has evolved over the Earth's entire history must not happen. And equally self-evident that all of these destructive, wasteful and polluting practices are fundamentally incompatible with ecological and biological sustainability on the Earth.

In the place of this negativity we feel must come greater awareness of the twin needs for biodiversity and sustainability. In time – if the Earth is to survive – we trust that everyone will subscribe in their own way to restoring essential ecological richness and maintaining ecological balance.

BlackRhinceros makes common cause with every individual and group genuinely flowing with this tide. We surf high on it – and proudly too!

Actions

We categorize environmental issues confronting destruction, pollution and waste into six main areas. Each has several subcategories:

  1. Biodiversity, including animal rights and survival of endangered and threatened species; safe food
  2. Conservation, reducing the negative effects of consumption; recycling
  3. Energy, including campaigns for sustainable, safe sources, nuclear free energy and for ways to reverse global warming
  4. Environmental justice and opposing cultural hegemonies and destruction
  5. Habitats, preservation and regeneration of life's habitats, including ocean and wilderness survival as well as for appropriate resource use on land and water region by region and internationally
  6. Pollution control and promotion of beneficial substances including noise

It is in these areas that BlackRhinoceros has aggregated and annotated links to many hundreds of carefully screened sites. Please go to these to take what the promoters of each campaign and organizations deem appropriate Action. This extends from prewritten emails supplied on the site to faxes, telephone numbers, personal visits, mounting or joining boycotts, handwrite letters and so on.
